SHOCK! andOARS : The Age of the Trieres
'Shock! and Oars' is a set of wargaming rules for recreating ancient galley battles on the tabletop. It is designed for two or more players to manoeuvre fleets of up to 60 ships. Orders, ship movement, ramming, deck fighting and damages are all recreated on the tabletop.
The Age of the Trieres- includes everything necessary to fight with the fleets of light and fast galleys that dominated the seas for 150 years. The trieres was possibly the fastest possible wooden galley ever and soon after it was invented all maritime states had to adopt it if they wanted to defend themselves, or to attack others. From the great empires down to individual city states, all powers in the Mediterranean deployed tiereis for battle at sea. They were overshadowed by larger types but never disappeared until the end of the antique world itself.
The players issue orders to their squadrons for movement and attack after they have decided the overall strategy for the battle. Squadron Leaders strive to hold their ships in control as the action breaks their formations. Ramming, boarding and shooting are all possible, as are collisions. Ships that have become separated operate autonomously until once again in control of their commanders.
The rules include simple provision for combat on land, which allows for recreation of the many amphibious battles in ancient accounts. A simple campaign is also included to give your battles a wider context.
Model ships can be used of any scale from 1/1200 up to 1/300. The rules are designed for card ships made at 1/400 scale.
